Specialised Practitioner of Arts Therapy pre-University Course

 

General information

The main aim of the course is to train Arts Therapists, that is to say, to provide individuals possessing skills in Artistic fields with the theoretical and methodological knowledge, allowing them to apply their artistic skills to a therapeutic process, accompanying people suffering from illness, physical and mental problems as well as developmental disorders.

 

Conditions of Entry (subject to validation by Training organisation)

- Higher education qualification (Art School, Music school, etc.)

- or confirmed experience in the fields of Health, Social work, Culture or Education.

- or work in the public domain such as exhibitions, performances, plays etc. subject to validation by Training organisation.

AND

- Equivalent of Batchelors Degree (French licence 3)

- or Professional experience in the fields of Health, Social work, Culture or Education proving skills and experience  linked to the aims of the Course.

 

IN ALL CASES, ATTENDANCE OF PRESENTATION – SELECTION SESSION IS OBLIGATORY.

 

Course structure

The course includes : 210 hours of teaching of theory and specialised practical activities plus 105 hours internship in the workplace.

 

1/ Teaching of theory and specialised practical activities : 210 hours

 

6 modules lasting 35 hours each (5 consecutive days) :

- General lectures : Medecine, Psychology, Pharmacology (introductory course), Biology, Physiology, Aesthetics, Introduction to Art History, Theory of Art Therapy.

- Technical lessons : Practical Art Therapy, Methodology, Observation and evaluation in Art Therapy, Case studies.

- Specialised practical activities :

            - Complementary artistic skills : students study 2 introductory artistic modules in fields different from their own.

            - Preparation for writing of Dissertation.

 

2/ Practical internship in workplace : 105 hours

 

Students undertake an internship aimed at confirming their interest in the field and testing their theoretical knowledge.

Internships must be organised by students before being approved by the Course Director. Students remain under the authority of an internship Director.

 

Programme

Module 1 : Introduction to Arts Therapy – 35h

- General principles of Physiology and Psychology in relation to Art Therapy.

- Human mechanisms involved in impression and expression.

- The Artistic Act

- The foundations of treatment protocol.

- Presentation of the multi-disciplinary healthcare team in a social and medical context.

 

Module 2 : basics of Arts Therapy – 35h

- Specificity of Art Therapy : conceptual and methodological notions

- Introduction to Human Biology, Physiology, and Psychology.

- The foundations of Aesthetics

- The potential effects of Art : the artistic phenomenon.

- Case studies and practical work.

 

Module 3 : Therapeutic methods in Arts Therapy – 35h

- General  Medical principles ( health, treatment, therapeutic protocol).

- Nosology, Semiology, Psychiatric Data.

- Main areas of the field of Medecine concerned by Art Therapy ( Psychiatry, Physical Medecine, Palliative Care, …………)

- Introduction to Pharmacology

- Practical work.

 

Module 4 : Arts Therapy Treatment Protocol – 35h

- Determining therapeutic aims.

- The originality of applying artistic skills to a therapeutic situation.

- Physical pathologies

- Prsentation of the multi-disciplinary healthcare team – medical and paramedical.

- Clinical observations and basic principles of evaluation in Art Therapy – the Observation sheet (part 1).

- Case studies and class work.

- Practical work.

 

Module 5 : the Arts Therapy Session – 35h

- Following and planning a course of treatment

- Observations and principles of evaluation (part 2)

- Epistemology of Art

- Classwork

- Case studies

- Complementary Artistic techniques (introduction)

 

Module 6 : Preparation for the writing of Scientific Publications – 35h

- Ability to present a problem.

- Developing a plan.

- Hypothetical propositions.

- Discussion of a Scientific Work.

- Proposal for a synthetic model of activity in Arts Therapy.

- Classwork

- Examination.

 

Internships – 105h

Aims : to put into practice evaluation methodology during a course of treatment.

 

Introductory course in artistic skills

Reserved for students enrolled on the 2007 course.

 

Evaluation and validation

The Specialised Practitioner of Arts Therapy pre-University Certificate is awarded to students who have successfully completed the following :

            1/ Written examination (with at least a pass result for each question) and a plan for a dissertation to be completed at the end of the course.

            2/ The internship must be validated by the Course Director.

 

This Certificate entitles the holder to a place on the D.U. Art-Thérapie / Arts Therapy University Courses of the Faculties of Medecine of either Tours University or Poitiers University.

 

Practical information

There are a limited number of places on the course.

Lectures and lessons take place in Tours.

Accommodation and food is available nearby.

 

Access to Course

- Individual applicants : enrolling on the course requires the completion of a specific contract (Contrat de formation professionnelle – article L 920.13 du Code du Travail) between the student and the Training Organisation.
