Arts Therapy covers the totality of Artistic techniques

Arts Therapy is the work of Artists trained in the field of Healthcare

 

The course is taught by University lecturers and Arts Therapy professionals. The course encourages the use of Artistic potential for therapeutic and humanitarian goals.

The course follows on from the Specialised Practitioner of Arts Therapy pre-University course.

 

General Information 

The University Diploma (DU) in Art Therapy from the University of Tours provides a comprehensive practical and theoretical training for Arts Therapists in accordance with the current French Code of Working Practise (Livre XI Code du travail)

The course aims to provide students with a University qualification equivalent to a Postgraduate qualification.

The University Diploma aims at developing evaluation techniques and research in Art Therapy.

 

Course graduates are entitled to practice as qualified Art therapists.

 

Conditions of Entry

Candidates must have ONE of the following :

- Master’s Degree (French Master 1)

- Certificat de formation théorique d’Intervenant Spécialisé en Art-Thérapie (Specialised Practitioner of Art Therapy pre-University Certificate) from the Tours School of Art Therapy (AFRATAPEM)

 

In each case candidates must be able to provide proof of an artistic skill. Each application is subject to approval by a commission.

 

Course Duration and Structure

The course lasts one year and includes 295 hours – 23 hours of lectures, 132 hours of Practical work, and 140 hours internship in the fields of Healthcare or Social Work. Each units lasts several days and takes place at the Faculty of Medecine in Tours.

 

 

 

General Course Information

4 Theoretical Units :

1 : Art and Medecine, 28 hours, 14-17/11/2006

2 : Arts Therapy ; theoretical models ; 35 hours, 2-6/01/2007

3 : Arts Therapy, therapeutic protocol , 35 hours, 17-20/07/2007

4 : Arts Therapy : Evaluation Procedures 35 hours,17-20/07/2007

 

Internships

Internship in the fields of Healthcare or Social Work, 140 hours

Written Internship report to be provided by student.

 

Dissertation preparation

The dissertation is a written document presenting and analysing the internship expereince.

The main areas of interest are evaluation and research.

A Unit on the preparation of the dissertation is offered (individual and group sessions), lasting 22 hours, 14-16/05/2007.

 

Evaluation

Internship report (25% total mark) : the report is approved by the internship coordinator and the educational commission.

Dissertation (50% total mark) : the dissertation must  be approved by the  educational commission and written to University and Scientific dissertation standards.

Oral presentation (25% total mark) : the oral presentation is held in front of panel made up of University teaching staff and professionals.

 

The Tours Arts Therapy University Diploma is a Postgraduate-level qualification

 

Professional opportunities

The Arts Therapist in France is part of a Healthcare team and can work as follows :

- Employed in the fields of Health, Education or Social Work (for an association, residential homes, prisons...)

- Employed in a hospital or clinic (part-time or tenure)

- Employed in special schools

- Employed in schools (teacher training, state school system etc.)

 

S/he can also open a Arts Therapy Private Practice.

 

Certain Arts Therapists continue studying and embark on Postgraduate research projects, Doctorates etc.

Fees

As part of a further education / postgraduate programme (employees, jobseekers out of education for more than 2 years...)

- financed by employer with special contract : 1245€+ University enrollment fees (195€ for 2005/6)

- financed individually : 1040€ + University enrollment fees (195€ for 2005/6)

 

As part of an undergraduate programme

A reduced fee is available for students who apply whilst still in full-time education or having stopped full-time education less than 2 years previously.
